A MAN who was arrested after an alleged sexual assault at the Stonehenge summer solstice celebrations on Tuesday morning has been bailed by police.

The 24-year-old man was taken to Melksham after the alleged incident and later released on police bail.

The only other arrest during the festivities was for drink-driving when a 33-yearold woman from Burford was pulled over by police.

A man was also given a fixed penalty notice for a drug offence.

Police kept a light presence during the night, leaving the security guards to deal with enforcing order at the stones. Although Wiltshire Police refused to release policing numbers, only saying an “appropriate” number were at Stonehenge, arrests fell substantially.

Last year nine arrests were made while three were reported for summons to court. In addition this year only one street warning for drugs was issued compared to 31 in 2015.

However, attendance numbers had halved, while many at the event also observed the new rule banning alcohol.

Supt Mark Sellers, said: “The policing operation this year focused on protecting the monument and environment by maintaining the integrity of the road network, minimising any impact on local communities and supporting English Heritage to ensure a safe and peaceful event for all.”
