A teenager from Redlynch joined up with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust to sail around the Solent.

13-year-old Emily Wright took part in the sailing trip along with 28 other young people recovering from cancer.

Emily finished her cancer treatment in October 2012 at Southampton General Hospital, she had been suffering from Optic Glioma.

6 yachts were in the event, which was spread over four days.

Sailing onboard vessels 42-48 ft in length, the trust provided a chance for young people to test themselves in a safe and supportive environment, with the experience of working in a team teaching valuable life skills.

Emily said:" It's a little bit daunting to start with because you don't know anybody but everyone's really friendly and obviously you have all have something in common, so it's easy to get to know each other.

"It's easy to make friends and you can always talk to one of the volunteers."

The adventure departed from East Cowes Marine on the Isle of Wight, the new crews then put their new skills to the test in the waters of the Solent.

After stopping over at Yarmouth Harbour and the picturesque bay of Newtown Creek for a BBQ, the yachts headed back to Cowes.

The trust was launched in 2003 with the aim of giving young people recovering from cancer the opportunity to rebuild their confidence through sailing.

Dame Ellen Macarthur, who tries to help out on the trips when available said: "The mental and social fall-out from cancer can be just as devastating as the physical illness.

"Everything we do is about building confidence, self-esteem and having fun together."
