A HAIRDRESSER who trained in some of the busiest cities in Europe is to retire after 58 years in the industry.

Michael Stoner, who learned his trade in London, Paris, Rotterdam and Duisburg, opened his first salon in Gloucestershire in 1959, before opening a second on Endless Street, Salisbury, in 1962.

In 1963, a woman called Diana joined the salon as a junior, and a blossoming friendship turned into love.

The couple married in 1971, and have two sons, James and Nick.

Michael opened further salons in Romsey in 1974, and Southampton the following year, before opening another in Salisbury Market Place in 1993 where Michael’s Hair Shop still operates today.

Eventually he decided to scale back the business, but kept the Salisbury salon running.

Now, with Diana set to retire, Michael has finally decided to cut his connection with Salisbury.

Incoming owner Laura Lee, who has worked with Michael for the last four years, said: “The salon has trained so many fine hairdressers in the city that it would appear that most of them have worked for Michael.

“He has always treated his staff like family and it has been a pleasure being part of Michaels Hair Shop team.

“Diana’s clients are extremely sad to lose her after being in her caring hands for so long.”

Helen Hosier, who has been a customer at the salon for more than 40 years, said: “I first started going when it was upstairs in Endless Street. I love the family atmosphere and the way they care for their staff.”

One of Michael’s original juniors from the early days of the Market Square shop, Debbie Cameron, said: “I started as a junior in 1994, and I have worked for the most amazing professional couple over the last 22 years.

“I will miss them both so much around the salon, but I know I’ve gained friends for life.”

The staff have said that they will miss the annual Christmas drinks at the Stoner’s home where Michael specialises in cocktails, but he will continue to pop into the store to see his friends.

Laura added: “We wish Michael and Diane lots of exciting and enjoyable memories to come as they enjoy retirement together.”
