WORK is being done to restrict high vehicles from accessing a city car park after travellers moved on with 30 caravans.

The group, which spent a few days on the car park by Churchill Gardens, came with a total of 49 vehicles.

They were handed an eviction notice the day after they arrived but were then told they could stay for a further three more days due to a number of welfare issues and the large number.

Salisbury City Council deputy clerk Annie Child said the clean-up was carried out by their own staff.

She said: “It was dealt with in-house by our parks team who took away a van and a half-full of rubbish. It was probably a morning’s work for a couple of people – it hasn’t cost the council any extra to clear it, it was just a distraction from the parks’ team principal role.

“The team whose role it is to keep the park free of rubbish were going to be there anyway, this was an unusual amount of rubbish though.

She added: “In that particular location measures are being taken to restrict access to high vehicles. However these people are quite determined to get into spaces – it’s a balance between spending a lot of money preventing this and then they make their way in anyway.

“It is something the councillors are going to consider further.”

The travellers left on November 17. In August travellers made the most of the absence of gates at Victoria Park to pitch on the top end of the park by St Francis Church.
