A SUPPORT centre for people whose lives have been affected by cancer has opened its doors in Salisbury.

The Wessex Cancer Trust’s Salisbury Support Centre is based at Beckett House in Bridge Street.

Centre manager Jackie Newman said: “Our vision is to provide effective, local support and information for all people affected by cancer. A diagnosis can be a daunting prospect whether you are living with it directly, or supporting a loved one through their journey.”

The new centre has trained volunteer befrienders who will provide a “listening ear” for clients and it will also provide counselling, massage and aromatherapy. Support is also available for family members or close friends, not just those with a cancer diagnosis.

The centre, which is in its first weeks, has already received a lot of interest from the local community, which Jackie says is “really encouraging”.

“We want to forge strong links with the community,” said Jackie. “We want to get the message out there that we are here to support people that need the services that we provide and will be providing in the near future.”

This is the seventh support centre to be opened by the Wessex Cancer Trust.

Sara Hawkins, the head of client services, is a breast cancer survivor herself and benefitted from the support offered by the trust.

“I don’t know what I would have done without it,” she said.

The services at the centre are provided free of charge, which Sara says helps to take away the financial worries that can come with getting a cancer diagnosis.

Sara said: “Whether you’re coming in for an appointment, a coffee or chat to a befriender, that’s fine to use the space how you want to.

“We look after people from the start, if they’re worried about a diagnosis or waiting for results, right the way through.”

The centre also hopes to encourage more men to come forward and access the support services available.

Those wishing to access the services or get involved as a volunteer befriender or fundraise for the charity can drop into the centre between 10am and 3pm, Tuesdays to Thursdays. Alternatively, call 01722 421 781 or email jackie.newman@wessexcancer.org.uk
