LUNCHES to tackle loneliness in Salisbury will continue into May after a successful first two months.

Barchester Healthcare launched its 'Don't Dine Alone' initiative as a way to reach out to isolated or vulnerable older members of the community over the winter period.

Anyone who would usually dine alone was welcomed to join staff at Milford House Care Home for lunch each Wednesday.

Due to the success of the programme, Milford House has decided to extend the initiative into April and May in the Salisbury area.

Recently the home welcomed Adele Stokes and Jenny Eldrett, who were treated to a tasty lunch in the home’s recently refurbished dining room and had a chance to chat to the home’s staff and residents while enjoying their food.

Not only did Jenny enjoy her meal and the company but she has decided to become one of Milford House’s band of invaluable volunteers who come into the home to spend time with residents and support the activities team in offering a broad spectrum of group and individual activities including going out into the community.

Philip Chapman, general manager at Milford House said: “We have been delighted by the response to this initiative from the local community and so have decided to extend it until the end of May.

"It has been heartening to see contacts and friendships being formed over a good meal, common interests being explored and links being established.

"We are already looking forward to welcoming back some local residents who have attended on a more regular basis, not only for lunch but to some of our scheduled activity events as well."

The lunches take place from 12.15pm every Wednesday through to the end of May.

Anyone is welcome, though spaces may be limited so please call Milford House on 01722 322737 beforehand so they are able to plan for numbers and dietary requirements.
