A YOUNG railway and steam train enthusiast has launched a fundraising campaign to build a steam wagon.

George Treasure, 14, has set up a JustGiving crowdfunding page to raise £17,000 to build a 4.5 feet model of a Foden steam wagon after being inspired by the exhibits on display at the Hollycombe Steam Museum in Hampshire.

The teenager, who studies engineering and physics at South Wiltshire University Technical College, has already attracted £500 of donations on his JustGiving crowdfunding page and a further £1,000 from engineering companies having contacted engineering companies, historical and heritage funds, and the Great Dorset Steam Fayre.

The completed steam engine will be displayed at Hollycombe, a charity-run working steam museum in Liphook, Hampshire. It would also be shown at other steam fairs and events.

George has Asperger’s syndrome and dyslexia and is hoping this project will inspire others who are struggling with the conditions to get involved with similar projects.

Speaking about the project he said: “It is an amazing technology that I think should be preserved and kept working. Steam engines are very interesting and intriguing, to think that with just heat and water we can make something move, that never gets old.”

“The satisfaction of seeing the engine run after all of the hard work would be amazing. Working on mechanical things has been a great benefit to my learning and I feel so privileged to be involved in this project.

“Any donations no matter how small would be hugely appreciated.”

He dreams of getting a job with steam engines but says he would happily settle for a position as a mechanical engineer or train driver. He is currently looking at opportunities in engineering and railway apprenticeships.
