A DAIRY farmer from Nunton has found a new way of bringing fresh milk to customers with a special vending machine.

The milk vending machine, which is located in the car park of the Radnor Arms pub, has been going down well with customers since its launch on July 17.

"It is a new venture for us and is a way we can engage with our customers better," said John Martin of Nunton Farm.

"We have had lots of positive feedback and the milk has sold well. It's been really positive."

John says the idea for the vending machine was sparked after a conversation at wedding a couple of years ago.

He was successful in getting a grant which helped cover a proportion of the costs and bring the idea to fruition.

"It is very exciting," said John, who is keen to grow the project. "Hopefully it will continue to do well and we sell more milk. If it goes well we can look at additional machines."

John says it is a difficult time for dairy farmers but by selling the milk itself the farm is able to improve its profits and revenue by getting more money for its milk.

He said: "When someone buys milk from a supermarket only a small proportion goes to the farm. Effectively [by using the milk vending machine] it means the money goes to the farm. We get a fair price."

The vending machine is one of the first to be installed near Salisbury and John says the idea is becoming more popular.

"It is a great idea and people really appreciate being able to support local farmers."

Milk gets from the farm to customers in about four hours.

"The main thing is the milk is fresh," adds John. "Hopefully people can taste that in the milk.

"It is fresh, local and free range."

The milk vending machine is open from 7am until 10pm, seven days a week. Glass and plastic bottles are available to buy at the machine.
