A BODY has been found in a field in Chilmark.

The Journal understands the man's body was found by a woman riding a horse in a field off Cow Drove near Chilmark at 2pm on Thursday afternoon (September 21).

Police say their investigation is "at an early stage" and the death is currently being treated as unexplained.

Formal identification has not taken place.

Central Hub Commander Supt. Chris Chammings said: “A thorough investigation has begun to understand the full circumstances surrounding this man’s death.

“People in the local community are likely to see an increased police presence in the area over the coming days."

Officers investigating this incident would like to hear from anyone who was driving in the area of Cow Drove, Chilmark, on Thursday, September 21 up until the time police attended at 2.30pm.  

They are especially interested in any potential dashcam footage of Cow Drove taken during this time.

Detective Sergeant Louise Randall today said: "Cow Drove is a very minor road, but we know it is widely used by drivers heading into Chilmark from the A303.

"Anyone who was driving along this route, especially if they have any dashcam video footage is asked to contact Wiltshire Police so that we can review it.

"We'd also still like to hear from anyone else who was in the area, pedestrians, dog walkers, horse riders, anyone that may have information that could be vital, to come forward and speak to us."
