A FIRST glimpse of the latest plans for a major city centre redevelopment will go on show at a talk on Tuesday.

The Maltings and Central car park scheme, expected to include shops, leisure facilities and housing, will be the focus of a public open meeting hosted by Salisbury Civic Society.

It will take place from 6.30pm in the City Hall's Alemein Suite on November 21.

Entry is free and all are welcome.

TH Real Estate, which owns the Maltings, along with the development managers Rivington Land and the architects Haskoll, will outline the principles of development for the site.

Richard Walters, head of major projects for Wiltshire Council, will also speak.

After the talks, there will be time for questions and discussion.

Salisbury MP John Glen said: "This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reshape a large area of the city centre.

"If Salisbury can develop a bold vision it will bring in new investment and provide a transformative boost for local residents and tourists alike.

"We need a wide-ranging solution encompassing retail, restaurants, housing, offices, a new arts quarter, and a transport interchange that will together be greater than the sum of its parts."

This will be the first public presentation of the emerging plans, although the council has made it clear that it will be an overview, rather than detailed proposals, which will not be published until next year.

Previously the council said a formal public consultation would happen this autumn with a detailed planning application to be submitted by December.

But now the consultation has been pushed back until 2018.

The delay raises questions over whether the first phase of the project will be completed by October 2020, as previously stated by the council.

Previously the Journal reported that a £6m government grant had been awarded to the council to clear buried rubble from the site to make the project financially viable.

This newspaper also revealed that the council's development partner, Stanhope, was withdrawing from the project.

TH Real Estate outbid the council to buy the Maltings for £25m three years ago.
