BOGUS workmen have conned an elderly woman in Wilton after claiming that her water would be turned off.

A man knocked on the woman's door in The Avenue yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) between 4.30pm and 5pm and said work needed to be carried out and that her water was going to be cut off.

The woman, in her 70s, was asked to hand over money for a device to be fitted that would enable her to still have water during that time.

When she had handed over money to the man, he left and said he would be back shortly.

Five minutes later, another man knocked at the door and told the woman she needed to hand over more money for the device. The woman handed some more money over.

A total of £80 was handed to the men. They requested more money, but the woman told them she had none, and they then left the scene.

The first man is described as white, aged between 25 to 35, approximately 5 ft 5 inches tall, of slim build but with a chubby face. He had fair hair which was swept back and was wearing a long sleeved shirt.

The second man is described as white, aged in his 20s, approximately 5 ft 8 inches tall and of slim build. He had dark short hair spiked at the front. He was wearing a smart black jacket and black trousers.

PC Peter Jung said: "We are investigating this incident and would like to hear from any residents who may have seen these two men knocking on doors in the area, or anyone who may have been approached by them but did not think to report it to police.

"We would encourage residents to always keep doors shut and locked and if someone comes to your home who you aren't expecting, it is important to check who it is by using a spy-hole. Do not open the door to anyone you don't know.

"Official visitors will always arrange an appointment beforehand. Don't keep large amounts of cash at home and never agree to have work carried out by someone who is just passing. If you think work needs to be done at your address, get quotes from several companies and ask friends or neighbours for recommendations first."

Anyone with information should call police on 101.
