WILTON House features in the new Hollywood blockbuster Tomb Raider which hits cinema screens this week.

The film stars Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl) in the lead role, under the direction of Roar Uthaug (The Wave). It also stars Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu and Kristin Scott Thomas.

Based on the computer game franchise, the film centres on Lara Croft, the daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanishes when she is a teenager.

Now 21, Croft decides to leave everything behind to go in search of her dad’s last-known destination - a fabled tomb on a mythical island.

The majority of the film was shot in Cape Town, South Africa but sequences were also filmed at Wilton House.

Wilton House was used to bring Croft Manor to life.

The estate has been used in a number of films, which most recently have included The Young Victoria and Johnny English Reborn.

In 2015, scenes from Outlander and The Crown were also filmed in the house and grounds.

Lord Pembroke said: “It is obviously very exciting to get a really big feature film like that [filming at Wilton House].

“There is always a huge air of excitement and buzz not only at the house but also around Wilton and Salisbury.”

He added: “We loved having it here, it was great for Wilton and promoting the local area.”

Lord Pembroke said it was “exciting” meeting the stars and film crew and seeing the house and grounds “transformed” for the movie.

He said: “I am very excited about seeing it.”

Vikander, who was a fan of the Tomb Raider games, speaking about the Lara Croft role said: “For me, she’s like the superheroes and action heroes we love; by seeing their journey to become the ‘super’ versions of themselves, we get to feel close to them and get to understand them, emotionally.”

Director Uthaug added: “When Lara Croft sets out on this journey, she’s not ready for what’s coming to her.

“She really has to rise to the challenge and, through her many ordeals, discover if she can become the Tomb Raider, ready for any adventure that might be coming for her.

“Audiences are going to really enjoy watching Lara find out who she is and what she’s really made of.”

Tomb Raider is in cinemas from today.
