ONE of the soldiers killed in a bomb blast in Afghanistan on Wednesday grew up in Figheldean on Salisbury Plain.
Lance Corporal Paul Upton, 31, was killed along with fellow 1st Battalion The Rifles soldiers Cpl Tom Gaden, 24, and Rifleman Jamie Gunn, 21, in the attack in Helmand Province.
His family moved to Cornwall in 2000, but L/cpl Upton maintained links with friends in Figheldean, and when on leave he would join friends socially in the local working mens' club.
He left the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment briefly to open a Sports shop in Amesbury but rejoined the Army as a 1st Battalion The Rifles soldier in 2007.
For a full tribute to L/cpl Upton see the March 5 edition of the Salisbury Journal.
