Golden celebrations for David and Brenda

A GOLDEN couple from Salisbury celebrated 50 years of marriage with family and friends at the weekend.

David and Brenda Martin, of Heath Road, met at his sister’s wedding when she was 18 and he was 25 and got married on November 28, 1959 at St Mary and St Nicholas Church in Wilton.

They received lots of cards and flowers on their anniversary and went to the Grasmere Hotel in Harnham on Saturday.

“We had lunch with family and friends and it was absolutely fantastic,” said Mrs Martin. “Everybody said they enjoyed it.”

Mr Martin, now 75, was a cycling club champion for the under 25s in the Salisbury Road Club and worked at Coombes Nursery, Chalke Factory in South Newton and Wilton Carpet Factory.

Brenda, now 69, worked at the Clarke & Lonnen department store in Salisbury before leaving to bring up their four children – Nigel, Christine, Tracy and Timothy.

She returned to work at Leaden Hall nursery and spent 20 years there, until retiring.

Nowadays the couple, who have seven grandchildren and one great grandchild, spend a lot of time at home and enjoy gardening and playing indoor bowls.

And the secret to a long and happy marriage? “Well we have never really fallen out to be perfectly truthful,” said Mrs Martin. “We have just got on with life.”
