HUNDREDS of people turned out to the New Forest Hounds Hunt on Boxing Day.

About 100 riders wearing traditional hunt dress were mounted and ready for the huntsman’s horn to signal the start of the drag hunt.

Riders shadowed the hounds as they searched for trails, which were laid earlier by dragging a scent soaked rag from horseback.

New Forest Hounds chairman Mike Squibb said: “It is always wonderful to see so many people come out and support this traditional event.

“It is one of the most important events in our calendar along with our November hunt and we are always guaranteed a good turnout.”

As Environment Secretary Hilary Benn launched an awareness campaign in response to Conservative leader David Cameron pledging a free vote on the repeal of the Hunting Act, Mr Squibb said he welcomed the Conservatives’ approach.

He added: “I agree with Mr Cameron’s approach. The current legislation is too vague in places with so much room for error. The proposition of an independent regulatory body is much more realistic.”

The New Forest was created as a royal hunting ground about 900 years ago, with the New Forest Hounds Hunt taking place since 1781.

Hampshire MP Julian Lewis, who is a supporter of fox hunting and attended the hunt on Saturday said: “We come to the Boxing Day hunt for personal pleasure but also for solidarity.

“Fox hunting is a great New Forest tradition that should be celebrated.

“The ban is more about stopping people’s enjoyment of hunting than it is about concern for the welfare of foxes.”

Leading anti-hunting campaigner Ken James welcomed the campaign supporting the ban launched by Environment Secretary Hilary Benn and backed by the actors Patrick Stewart, Jenny Seagrove and Tony Robinson.
