PLASTIC bottle and cardboard recycling facilities are being removed from across Wiltshire this month.

Wiltshire Council has reviewed the use of the county’s mini recycling sites, such as those in car parks, after introducing a kerbside collection for plastic bottles and cardboard. In the first six months since it was introduced, households across the county recycled more than 10,000 tonnes of plastic bottles and cardboard.

And in the first quarter of 2012/13 the amount of plastic bottles and cardboard collected from mini recycling sites fell by 78 per cent compared to the same period in 2011/12.

As a result, the council has closed 23 of the least used mini recycling and a further 58 sites will have plastic bottle and cardboard containers removed but paper, glass and can recycling banks will be available.

Linda Conley, portfolio holder for waste, said: “The new kerbside collections of plastic bottles and cardboard, introduced at the end of last year, have got off to a very successful start.

“We are delighted that people are using this service and recycling more of their plastic bottles and cardboard.

“We need to recycle more and landfill less because the amount we pay in landfill tax is rapidly increasing from £64 per tonne to £80 per tonne by 2014.

“The introduction of the new kerbside collections has led to a sharp fall in the amount of plastic bottles and cardboard being taken to mini recycling sites, such as those in car parks.”
