People to be honoured at Local Hero Awards

SALISBURY’S Local Hero Awards take place on Sunday, honouring the city’s kindest, bravest and most inspirational people.

The annual awards, organised by the Salisbury Journal and Spire FM, began in 2004 and since then scores of incredible people have been publically thanked for making Salisbury and south Wiltshire a better place to be.

This year the awards ceremony is taking place at Salisbury Arts Centre.

The nominees and their families have been invited to the event, which will also be attended by local dignitaries, award sponsors and representatives from the emergency services.

With awards to hand out in 17 categories, it promises to be a busy, exciting and emotional afternoon.

Guests will hear tales of outstanding bravery, triumph over adversity and good deeds.

Among those to be honoured will be good friends and neighbours, charity workers, medical professionals and devoted carers.

There will also be awards for inspirational teachers, bosses, and members of the emergency services and armed forces.

Children and teenagers who have overcome the odds or shown exceptional courage are also rewarded as part of the event.

And the ceremony will culminate with a lifetime achievement award and a presentation to the community group of the year.

Salisbury Journal editor and publisher Bill Browne said: “I am very much looking forward to the 2012 Local Hero Awards. This is a chance to tell the stories of those people who go the extra mile to make this a better place to live and always put others first.

“It is always a happy occasion and a wonderful chance to recognise our local heroes.”

The awards have been sponsored by local businesses and full coverage of all the winners will be in next week’s Journal.
