I AM a resident of Whiteparish and an inveterate pub-goer (for the social aspect you understand), so I am blessed in that my village still just manages to provide enough steadfast clientele to hold the heads of the owners of three hostelries just above the waterline.

WITH feelings of Salisbury residents running high at the moment about the vast number of new houses to be built in and around this city during the next 18 years, I believe that we should look at the bigger picture as well and the government's overall intentions.

RECENTLY, the Journal printed a letter from a James Robertson, Salisbury District Council's portfolio holder for the environment, who proclaimed the council's household waste policy a "Resounding Success".

We are still trying to recover from the shock of discovering that our village of Firsdown (with only 256 homes) is being targeted for a staggering proposed increase in homes - an additional 2,500, one fifth of all the extra homes proposed for the entire Salisbury district over the next 20 years.

I HEARD on the news last week, with growing disgust and incredulity, that the government is going to deport those wonderfully loyal, courageous and proud Gurkha soldiers who have retired here after serving all their working lives in the British Army.

I READ the recent Forest Journal cover article about the effects in Ringwood of changes to health and safety legislation regarding street closures with dismay, particularly as I have participated in the town's carnival and am on the festival committee which organises a number of charitable activities within the town.
