Amesbury's road chaos was so easily avoidable

WILTSHIRE County Council seems to prefer two roundabouts when one would be far better.

We already have two roundabouts at the top of Boscombe Hill, in Amesbury, where one roundabout would better serve the purpose.

Two roundabouts immediately next door to each other causes confusion and will surely be the site of many accidents.

I have seen police drivers confused at these two roundabouts.

And now, Amesbury motorists, as well as other road users driving through Amesbury, have had to endure major disruption while the council, in it's "wisdom", replace one roundabout with two roundabouts, at the junction of Earls Court Road with the A345. One has to admit that the single roundabout which existed was not the best solution to the situation.

But all that was required was to slightly reposition the roundabout in a southerly direction, alter the path of Earls Court Road in a southerly direction and alter the path of Salisbury Street in a northerly direction.

By altering the paths of these two roads they could have both been made to meet at a single roundabout.

The other point about these major road works is the amount of time that they are taking.

I understand that the contractors have been allowed 12 weeks to remove one roundabout and build two in its place.

We have endured eight weeks so far and very little seems to have happened, apart from losing the pedestrian crossing - the contractors are not there every day.

I estimate that moving the roundabout and the two roads could have been completed in a little over two weeks - but we have got to endure another four weeks to finish up with a dangerous road system.

What next - traffic lights on the two roundabouts?
