Time for action over Wilton's traffic problems
THANKS TO Mrs Lorford (Pembroke Court, Wilton) for highlighting the horrors facing Wilton residents and visitors in respect of the gross overuse of the A30 road as it passes through Wilton.
Over the past five years I have continually raised these problems with Wilton council, the Salisbury transport team, both district and county councils and, more
recently, kept our Salisbury MP in the picture.
They have all expressed agreement that there are major
problems with present set up and they have all indicated support of the need for action but matters have not yet been improved in any way.
The recent and quite extraordinary approval to allow Southampton based containers to be transported to and stored in Dinton looks to be a final straw.
Matters are surely now to get worse; a scenario which most of us thought was impossible.
The A30 was, back in the 1930s to 1950s, the major trunk road from London to the West, but today it is hardly fit to be a B road. Yet it is expected to safely accommodate an ever increasing level of traffic and, in particular, heavy goods vehicles.
Much of the A road through Wilton is unsafe and very dangerous to all users and, beyond the personal safety factors, presents resident with likely vibratory damage to property and extra maintenance costs.
There is also the detraction of Wilton as a pleasant and viable place to live - quite an achievement for those who promote the town as an important and
attractive part of Wiltshire's history and future. The time has come to face reality, forget about the words of comfort, support and understanding and look for real solutions.
Consider re-classifying the A30, restrict HGV usage, eliminate the rat run factors (one way systems), introduce traffic calming and improved control traffic lights.
Remember the A30 in Wilton and its surrounds impacts on the lives of local people just as much as the A303 with all its emotive link to Stonehenge - spend money on "all" the right things.
