Traffic diversion could fix Wilton's problems
WHAT a fool I was in thinking that a move from the hustle, bustle and traffic of Salisbury to Wilton would be a peaceful one.
Why did I ever moan about traffic when I lived on Devizes Road?
It was but a country lane compared to the A30, that I now live on, in Wilton.
I have had four years of lorries thundering past (ironically, as I type this the walls are shaking), not being able to open my front windows in the summer, and
making sure that I walk with my children on the inside of the
pavement lest they get dragged up the road by the wing mirror of a passing lorry.
Don't get me wrong, we love Wilton.
The peaceful walks in Grovely Woods, our unusual Italianate church, the tiny little library, the lively pubs, our wonderful
hardware store and being able to buy fresh bread from Reeves being just a few of the reasons we like living here.
But, we also have to put up with empty shops, dilapidated buildings, potholes, risking life and limb if you are brave enough to cycle anywhere, and, of course, there are the traffic jams.
Surely, if, as Mr Colin Jones pointed out in these pages recently, improvements were made to the A30 and the lorries diverted
elsewhere, things in Wilton would improve immeasurably for
residents and visitors.
After all, how many thousands of visitors go to Wilton Shopping Village in their coach loads and our beautiful stately home, Wilton House, but never set foot in the town itself?

Does not a lot of this traffic also go through Barford St. Martin to Downton? Then too some proceeds from Downton and Teffont to the A.303. Which improvements to the A.30 would be possible? Further more is it proposed the traffic turns off the A30 elsewhere, if so where?
There is nothing that anyone can do stop any sort of traffic flow on a Public Highway. That being so Councillors should not give planning Consents that encourage the traffic in the first place. ie The Container Store at Dinton and any thing of its ilk. Part of the problem for the RAF at their Chilmark Location down the road from Dinton was the matter of Access.
There would be huge lorries 'going back and forth' in an attempt to turn off the Dinton Road through Teffont Dip to the RAF Site. This matter was referred back to the responsible Minister by Robert Key MP.and after a while the RAF left.
One needs to wonder which genious permitted others with heavy transport to move onto the Dinton Site?

Well naturally the reference to Downton was a Typo and should have read Dinton. Now one hears that tractor lorries of double the present maximum length are to be allowed on the roads on an experimental basis.
What about opening up the Railway Station at Wilton?[bold]bold[/bold]
