Remember real Christmas spirit
AT this time of the year, when we are all beginning to be so involved with the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, should we not take time to remind ourselves of the real meaning of Christmas?
The reality is that God, in his compassion for mankind, sent his only son, Jesus Christ, to be the saviour of the world, experiencing all the human tragedies and personal traumas that can so quickly beset us all. He overcame all these things, not in his strength alone, but in the strength of the Holy Spirit bestowed on him by God.
If we are only to begin to follow his example today, should we not consider more the plight of the less fortunate members of our society.
Those, who perhaps through no fault of their own, suddenly find themselves homeless, jobless, or perhaps suddenly bereaved can see little prospect of anything but continuing distress and adversity.
Here in Salisbury and the surrounding area, we see true witness in the work of the various Christian organisations that respond so willingly to these heartfelt needs.
The Alabare Care Homes, The Salvation Army and the Trussell Trust, to name just a few.
Another example is the annual appeal made by the Salisbury Journal for the benefit of a very wide cross-section of the public. Long may it continue.
May we encourage everyone at this time, to give their most generous support to all these endeavours, whether financially or otherwise, to enable them to continue in this very worthwhile work.
By doing this, we might just begin to kindle within our own hearts, a little of God's compassion for mankind, which, let's face it, is the true "spirit of Christmas".
