Foal rescued from under car

FIREFIGHTERS from Burley rescued a helpless New Forest foal trapped beneath a car at Thorney Hill near Bransgore.

Resident Veronica Harrison raised the alarm after finding the stricken animal lying underneath the parked Ford Ka in Burley Road on Friday.

She said: "I think the foal must have fallen asleep and rolled under the car. It was absolutely stuck.

"He was quite sensible about the whole thing.

"Had he panicked he could have pierced his stomach. But he didn't struggle or anything. I was with him for about an hour."

Firefighters from Burley, head agister Jonathan Gerrelli, the special animal rescue teams from Eastleigh and the rural safety officer attended the incident.

Fire station watch manager Graham Tucker said the foal would not have got out without help.

"We eased him out. But we were ready to lift the car off," he said.

The foal suffered grazes around its eyes but was otherwise unijured.

The foal's distraught mother ran off when the firefighters arrived on the scene but some local men rounded her up and reunited her with the foal.
