French visit for Hillside children
CHILDREN from a Verwood school visited Nothe Fort in Weymouth to learn more about the Second World War.
Pupils from Hillside Community First School travelled to the historical site to experience what life was like in the 1940s.
Dressed as evacuees, the children took part in a number of role plays to bring the topic to life. They found out what it was like to be a wartime schoolchild, went shopping with ration books, and even took cover from an air-raid in an Anderson shelter.
After the trip, one parent brought in a collection of wartime memorabilia to show the children, including a 1940s American army jeep. Also on display were military uniforms, a wind-up record player and a de-commissioned rifle.
