More cash needed for badger jabs

THOUSANDS of pounds have been raised towards a vaccination programme to save Hampshire and Isle of Wight’s badger population from a killer disease.

Badgers have already been identified as carrying bovine tuberculosis (b TB) in Dorset.

The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust has welcomed the Whitehall postponement of a badger cull in Gloucestershire and Somerset but fears this might only be a temporary stay of execution.

So, at the end of November, the trust launched an urgent appeal to raise at least £45,000 to care for badgers and cattle on its nature reserves.

The trust’s chief executive Debbie Tann says they have raised so far almost £12,000 for badger vaccination. Go to hwt.org.uk for details.
