AN East Dorset care home has been awarded Beacon status after its care for residents was judged to be gold standard.

Oakdene Care Home in Three Legged Cross won the top category of Gold Standard for Care Homes award for its programme of care for residents who are nearing the end of life.

The award will be presented on March 7 in London.

To be eligible Oakdene implemented Gold Standard Frame-work (GSF) procedures and gave training to every member of staff, including nurses, carers, catering and housekeeping staff. Oakdene also submitted a portfolio showing evidence of success in 20 areas.

The award means Oakdene’s staff satisfy residents’ needs and preferences with “enthusiasm, dedication and vision”. It also demonstrates that the quality of care for residents nearing the end of their life has been enhanced.

Manager Kathy Milsom said: “Having Beacon status probably makes Oakdene unique among nursing and dementia care homes in Wimborne and the surrounding areas of Dorset.

“We are extending the same Gold Standard of care to residents in our newly-opened Acorn Lodge, to enhance the end of life care for people with dementia.”

Deputy manager Julia Hill, who heads Oakdene’s GSF programme, said: “Congratulations to our team of staff who have all worked so hard to achieve solid gold accreditation, for the benefit of Oakdene’s residents.

“We are all thrilled.”

When residents come to Oakdene the things that are important to them are discussed and an advance care plan is drawn up to embrace every aspect of their lives.

Their care plan is reviewed regularly, helping residents and their families to feel confident that their choices will be considered at all times. Oakdene also works with GPs and specialists to reduce hospital admissions.
