Free family fun at archaeology event
2:00pm Thursday 5th September 2013 in New Forest News
A FREE family event exploring prehistoric gems and archaeological discoveries is being held in Damerham this Saturday from 10am until 4pm.
YesterPlay aims to bring history to life in unusual ways.
Families can enter the Battle Zone and experience warrior fighting with The Viking Society, giant catapults and archery.
There will be storytelling and drama workshops. Damerham’s Play Trail will be turned into the Craft Zone, where children can take part in a range of history inspired and woodland crafts, including fire lighting. There is also a chance to get hands on as an archaeologist in the Detective Zone, including investigating prehistoric poo.
The event is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and is part of FunQuest’s programme of activities for children and young people living in and around Damerham.
The event forms part of the year-long RocDam project, on Rockbourne Roman Villa and the Damerham Prehistoric Burial Site.
The RocDam team will be creating a pop-up museum to showcase their community exhibition at the event.
Laura Bullivant of South West Hampshire Arts and Museums Service said: “YesterPlay is very exciting. People will be amazed by such an extraordinary event. It’s a real community effort and an opportunity to help young people learn about the archaeology in the area in a fun and playful way.”
