Top musicians to being heavenly music to church
HEAVENLY Music is being promised at a season of two concerts led by professional musicians at St James’ Church, Alderholt.
The first concert, this Sunday at 5pm, will feature vocalists Bryony and Deborah Purdue, Toby Carson and Tobias C Rihm, who are performing Haydn’s Missa Brevis St Johannis de Deo and Salve Regina with the support of a musical consortium with members from Dorset orchestras.
The programme includes Haydn’s concert for organ and orchestra and other pieces conducted and led by Mr Rihm.
The second concert is on Saturday, September 14, and will feature Stephen Binnington, who is taking a detour on a tour of concert dates that extend from Exeter Cathedral to Westminster Abbey. He will play a selection of music by Handel, Vierne, William Lloyd Webber and others.
Each concert will include about an hour of top-class music, with a glass of wine.
Admission is free but donations will be welcome to help cover the costs, and the proceeds after meeting the performers’ costs will go to St James’ Church.
Vicar Pip Martin said: “St James’ Church is one of those little gems that are quickly driven past, but all those who pause and venture in are immediately struck by the special feeling of the place.
“Musicians of all kinds have often told me they enjoy performing here. So I’m delighted to be welcoming performers of such quality to this little season of concerts we have arranged.
“Local people usually have to travel to the city to enjoy events like this, so it’s a real thrill to bring the opportunity for great music here.”
