VOLUNTEERS are needed to catch speeding drivers in Verwood.
The police are launching a Community Speed Watch (CSW) in the town, and are offering to train people up to use handheld cameras to crack down on the problem.
A spokesman said: “Speed is one of the four main contributory factors to fatal road collisions, the others being drink-driving, use of mobile phone while driving and failing to wear a seat belt.”
When the CSW team carry out speed checks, they will record how many vehicles were checked and how many were observed exceeding the speed limit thresholds.
A warning letter will be sent by Dorset Police to the registered keeper on the first two occasions their vehicle is seen exceeding the speed limit.
If the vehicle is observed for a third time, details will be sent to the local Safer Neighbourhoods Team for further attention.
To get involved contact the Safer Neighbourhood Team on 101 or register online at www.dorset.police.uk/default.aspx?page=6859.
