A BEAGLE from Sandleheath has finished runner-up in the inaugural Hampshire Top Dog competition.

Lucy - also known as Dufosee Lucinda with Matoutahi - who is owned and shown by Nikki Denny, was one of 66 pedigree dogs entered in the show, all of whom had to prequalify for this prestigious new competition. Miss Denny said: “I am so proud of Lucy.

“She is only 20 months old and to beat all those other top dogs at such a young age is amazing.

“She really showed her socks off for me all day; she is a sweetheart who just loves to please, and is a natural showgirl.”

Miss Denny’s Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen dog Hero, also known as Debucher Dartagnan at Janimist, also qualified and got through to the final 16.

The overall winner was a Saluki from the Southampton area.

“It has been an exciting start to 2014 for Lucy,” said Miss Denny, who co-owns the dog with Andrew Dawson.

“She has already won at the Boston Championship Show in January and the Four Counties Beagle Club Championship Show in March as well as being placed in a tough class at this year’s Crufts.”
