A WIDOW whose husband was killed by a drink-driver is backing Dorset Police’s Christmas drink and drug drive campaign.

Margaret Waterland has allowed the publication of photographs from the collision which claimed the life of her husband David in the hope it acts as a warning to others.

The images show the shocking impact of the collision, which happened as the couple returned from an evening with friends.

Mr Waterland, 69, of Wareham, died at the scene while Mrs Waterland escaped with minor injuries.

She said: “I am urging everyone to make sure they don’t drink and drive this Christmas. Plan how you are going to get home before you go out. Designate a driver or get a taxi.

“Drink driving is simply not worth it. It is not only innocent lives you destroy but you also ruin your own family’s lives – they suffer too.

“On 15 May 2013, I lost my beloved husband, Sue and Mark lost their father, Emily, Madelena, and Freddie lost their grandfather – now there is just a huge void where David used to be. Please don’t do this to another family.”

Stewart Rosoman, 51, of Milton Abbas, was jailed for six years last month after being found guilty of careless driving while unfit through drink. His MGF smashed into Mr Waterland’s Honda Jazz in May 2013.

The force’s annual drink and drug drive campaign started on Monday and runs until Thursday, January 1.

There will be an increase in traffic patrols and roadside checks.

If someone is caught drink driving they will face a minimum 12 month driving ban, a criminal record, up to six months in prison and a fine of up to £5,000.

Members of the public who suspect someone is drink driving are urged to call police immediately.
