A FORDINGBRIDGE scout leader is taking on a high-flying challenge to raise funds for a new roof at the group’s headquarters.

Derrin Berry, who is an assistant scout leader for 1st Fordingbridge Scouts, will be doing a tandem parachute jump at Netheravon on February 7.

The scout group is looking to raise £28,000 to replace its aging roof at its HQ at Roundhill, which has been leaking.

Speaking about his fundraising challenge the 44-year-old said: “I am looking forward to it. I am nervous, but quite excited.”

This is the first time he has taken part in a parachute jump.

The cost of the jump has been donated by HWS Aluminium in Fordingbridge, which means all the money raised can go towards the new roof appeal.

So far about £5,000 has been raised for the roof through bag packing, raffles and quiz nights.

Derrin, who has been a scout leader since 2010, added: “The scouts are an important part of any of our local towns, providing activities and opportunities for young people that they would not normally get, which require us to have a meeting place.”

The scout leader, who also volunteers with the Fordingbridge Community First Responders, says the scout’s HQ is also used by the wider community in the town for Saturday markets, craft fairs and a meeting place for local groups.

The community first responders will be using the building for training and requalification.

He said: “The HQ is becoming more of a community hall rather than just for the scout group.”

Assistant group scout leader Tony Parker said: “The group is over 100 years old and our existing building was built in the mid-50s, which is now showing signs of age with a leaking roof. Support for the group would be greatly appreciated to help us to continue to provide exceptional activities for all our members.”

Sponsorship forms will be at Retro Barbers and the Ship Inn. Alternatively, anyone wishing to sponsor Derrin or make a donation to the scout’s roof appeal can call him on 07887 242 850 or email derrin@lastminute scouts.com.

Donations can also be made on the 1st Fordingbridge Scout Group’s Just Giving page, which will be going live soon.
