POLICE in the New Forest and the Verderers are urging people to report animal accidents.

Police have issued information on what to do:

- The police and the Verderers or Agisters must be informed as soon as possible and well within 24 hours of the accident. Failing to report an accident is an offence.

- Give a good location – the road name, nearest junction or noticeable building.

- State what animal has been injured and include the colour and markings if known.

- Accidents involving cows, horses, ponies, donkeys, mules, pigs, sheep, dogs or goats must be reported.

If the animals are involved in a collision the Agister will need details because the livestock are classed as property.

If the owner of the vehicle is not present then details of the owner should also be provided.

Also please give the registration of the vehicle(s) involved. New Forest animals have priority on New Forest roads.

The Verderers offer a £1,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of a driver who fails to report an accident with a commoner's animal. Report an accident to the police on 101 or 999 and the Verderers or Agisters on 02380 282052.
