THIEVES used a stolen Land Rover to ram raid the Co-operative store in Bransgore.
Police were called to the scene at Ringwood Road shortly after 12.45am on Saturday.
A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: "A stolen Land Rover Defender was driven into the front of the store and an attempt made to remove the cash machine inside by a group of men. This attempt was unsuccessful and nothing was taken from the store. No-one was hurt during the incident."
The men left the scene in a silver Honda Accord, which was found abandoned in Brook.
The spokesman added: "Detectives are following lines of enquiry and reviewing CCTV footage. At the current time the incident is not being linked to any other reports recently received by police."
