POLICE are looking to trace a fan who threw a flare towards the pitch during the first game at the Ray Mac for the newly-formed Salisbury Football Club.

The incident happened on Tuesday when Salisbury drew 2-2 with Totton in front of a crowd of 729.

Sergeant Dave Whitby, from the Southern Wiltshire Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "This was an exceptionally stupid, and very dangerous thing to do, particularly given the scrutiny that the club are under as they try and get back into a league.

"The individual who did this could have jeopardised everything that staff and fans have fought for.

"Throwing objects at a ground is a specific offence and if formally prosecuted, the person responsible for throwing the flare could be subject to a minimum three year football banning order.

"I am appealing for supporters who witnessed the incident to contact me and provide any information or images they have.

"I am working with the club to identify the individual responsible and the group that they were with.

"The club may well consider banning anyone linked to the incident from the ground."

Anyone with information should call Sgt Whitby on 101. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously.
