The leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Roy Perry, donned a hard hat and wielded a spade to mark the start of the major phase of constructing a purpose built facility for the young people of Ringwood.

The new building, called The Place, will be situated on Carvers Recreation Ground in Southampton Road, adjacent to the Skate Park and football pitches.

Councillor Perry’s support has secured the majority of the funding for the project with Hampshire County Council contributing £400,000 from its Investing in Hampshire Fund. Ringwood Town Council has put in £75,000 with New Forest District Council adding £70,000 and Ringwood School contributing £5,000, making the investment in the future a real partnership.

There was much praise for the co-operation between the authorities involved and Councillor Perry was most impressed with the enthusiasm shown by Ringwood to secure the facility for young people, saying: “I wish other towns and parish councils showed as much commitment. Ringwood is a town that has demonstrated perseverance.” Commenting on the project, Ringwood Councillor Mark Steele also declared it very worthwhile and ‘Life-changing for some of our young people’.

The Place will be managed by a charity which is to be set up and will provide a permanent base for activities as well as offering support on drug awareness, teenage pregnancy and sexual health. There will be training and educational opportunities in addition to fun events and, after many years, local youngsters will have their very own place. Ringwood School student Jade Wardle is excited about the project and said: “After such a long wait it’s going to be really good.” Fellow student Roger Frederick echoed her words. He is looking forward to going to The Place, adding: “It will be great for after-school sessions.”
