PUPILS and staff at Moyles Court School near Ringwood gathered to remember fallen heroes today.

They held a two minutes silence around a poppy installation, which was created by pupils in their art and history clubs with help from Roy Winspear, the head of art, and Ruth Butterfield, the head of history.

The school's history club held special fundraising activities in aid of the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal, including a Remembrance Day bake-off where the pupils designed, created and sold homemade shortbread and cakes.

Year 8 pupil, Georgia Vitty, has driven the entire fundraising and awareness campaign. She was inspired by the poppy installation at the Tower of London and wanted to re-create an installation at Moyles Court.

She said: “At history club we discussed how to raise money and awareness this year and I suggested the idea of creating our own poppy installation at the front of our school. We made 200 poppies with wire and tissue paper then covered with PVA glue. After our service all pupils and staff will be presented with a poppy, to remember the fallen.”

The results of the bake-off were announced during an assembly and the overall winner of the Remembrance Bake-Off Award went to Lucy Brimble and Rachel Goff in Year 9 for their design and authentic and traditional Red Cross trench cake.

A cheque for more than £130 will be sent to the Royal British Legion.

Headmaster Richard Milner-Smith said: “Our weekly history club continues to provide an excellent forum for the exchange and discussion of ideas for our pupils and I am immensely proud of the pupils’ efforts and money raised for the Poppy Appeal. The pupils have been so engaged in the installation project and their commitment to make their vision become a reality is remarkable.”
