A HISTORICAL society in Verwood will be forced to fold after 40 years because of dwindling committee members.

The Verwood Historical Society, which was formed in 1978, is dedicated to preserve Verwood's priceless heritage but needs a chairman and new committee members to take the club forward.

The society boasts a membership of about 60 who meet monthly at St. Michael's Parish Centre.

Founder member and archivist Pam Reeks said: "It will be very sad if the club closes, but our committee members are getting older and we need new people to take the reins.

"There has been a vacancy for chairman for a few years and, more recently, for a speakers secretary. Other committee members are also looking to retire.

"I formed the club years ago with a couple of others and we used to meet at each other's houses. A few years later we decided to hold a monthly meeting and invite a speaker. The society was very popular."

Member Brian Hawkins said: "If people don't come forward to offer their services as committee members the club will close in May. This sad state of affairs was recently announced.

"Much work has been done over the years by society members to ensure the preservation of the history of Verwood in oral, written, photographic and tangible form.

"It would be a terrible shame if the society closes."

A wide range of historical subjects are covered by speaker's every month and visits are organised to historical towns and cities across the country throughout summer.

The club needs chairman, a secretary and events organiser. New members are always welcome.

If anyone can help ring Brian on 01202 829924.

The Verwood Historical Society meet every third Tuesday at 7.30pm.
