A LUNCH club that throws a lifeline to lonely and housebound Fordingbridge folk is desperately seeking volunteers.

Every Tuesday dozens of people gather Avonway in Fordingbridge for the Rae Straton Lunch Club for a hot meal and a game of bingo.

For some the lunch club is the only chance they get to go out and talk to people. But it wouldn’t be possible without the people who give up their time to help.

Now just 20 people help each month and chairman John Adams is issuing a plea for more volunteers to give up about four hours of time every month.

John said: "Former GP Rae Straton started the club many years ago and we have run it ever since. We would like a commitment from our volunteers of about one lunch session a month. Our volunteers enjoy giving something back to the community and to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves.

"Once a week we offer the lonely a warm and friendly environment and a hot meal. For many people it is the only opportunity they have to socialise."

The self-funded group aims to end the isolation that old age can sometimes bring – providing transport, a hot lunch and organising social activities for its members.

Over the years hundreds of its patrons have benefitted from the friendship and support offered by the club.

John added: “We like to have a team of about six volunteers every week between 10am and 2pm to cope otherwise it is such hard work."
