A LONG-AWAITED skatepark has been opened to the public in a popular play area in Ringwood following a £150,000 refurbishment.

Teenagers have been sliding and grinding ever since the park opened on Friday after a much-needed revamp.

Mayor of Ringwood Michael Thierry said: "It’s amazing to see so many young people are using the site and it’s incredible the skill they show on bikes, boards and blades.

"I am sure my fellow councillors are equally as pleased to know that we were able to work with young people to create such a splendid facility to test themselves on."

The work started after the town's skaters and BMX cyclists urged the town council to replace the "hazardous" skate ramps at their park.

They gave a presentation to council members to replace the rusty and split metal ramps with new equipment and concrete ramps.

Installed around 14 years ago, the existing site at Carvers Field has been condemned by its users as noisy and potentially dangerous.

Members of the town council agreed to raise funds for the scheme and Bournemouth based skatepark builders Maverick set to work.

The skatepark will be officially opened in the summer, with a large Skate Fest planned for the town.

The old park was supported by former Ringwood councillor Danny Cracknell - a strong supporter of the young people of the town.
