BIKERS will no longer be roaring into Fordingbridge for the Moto Guzzi GB in August.

For almost two decades, bikes from the International V-Twin Motorbike Rally have revved up for the packed High Street procession, lined five rows deep with visitors and residents to watch the spectacle.

But fears that last year's 40th rally was the last for the town have now been confirmed.

Fordingbridge Mayor Malcolm Connolly said: "The Moto Guzzi rally was something the town looked forward to hosting each year and we are saddened that we are losing it.

"The event contributed to the local economy, the club raised thousands of pounds for our charities and members of Moto Guzzi became good friends.

"The event attracted thousands of people to Fordingbridge and it became a strong community event, with the Moto Guzzi team camping on the recreation ground. We would make a weekend of it and have bands playing, scouts serving refreshments and a real ale bar.

"However, we are still in contact with Moto Guzzi and we hope the club reconsider for the year's ahead."

The Moto Guzzi Club GB was established 1976 by a small band of 40 enthusiasts.

And for decades the club has held its August bank holiday meeting next to the river.

However with rising costs and ageing members, it must be remembered that many set up the event 40 years ago, the annual summer spectacle has come to an end.

One member said last year: "The official V Twin rally has been going many years, set on the river side in Fordingbridge. They have a live band on the Saturday night and a good selection of local beers and ciders.

"It is generally a really good weekend. After going for a few years now it's just nice to catch up with other Guzzi owners that you might not see any other time of the year."

Mr Connolly added: "Moto Guzzi was a fantastic event and it is a deep shame that it won't be held this year."

The Journal is awaiting a comment from Moto Guzzi.
