THE parish council in Hyde is calling for “atrocious” and “dangerous” potholes, which have led to roads being closed in the village, to be repaired.

Buddle Hill Lane is still closed off due to the state of the road, with residents having to take alternate routes, while Hern Lane has now been reopened.

Hyde Parish Council chairman, Ann Sevier says the village has been waiting for two years for repairs to be carried out.

She said: “We have got to the point where we don’t know what else to do. We keep reporting them and bringing them to the attention of the highways authority and we keep doing it and keep doing it and it does not seem to get done.

“We would politely say, please come and do our road.”

Both roads provide a direct route from Hyde to the A338.

Describing the state of the roads, Cllr Sevier said: “It is atrocious and unacceptable. It is more a crater.

She added: “They [the potholes] are three times as worse. We reported them as small holes and if potholes are not filled in they become craters. If you don’t keep on top of it it gets worse and worse. Everytime the water fills them the sides break and it just gets deeper and deeper.

“The problem is at night time and the other problem is when the craters are full of water people don’t realise that they are deep enough to break an axle.

“I think it is very dangerous because anyone on a motorcycle would not have a hope.

“This is why it is now so dangerous that they have had to close the road. This is so bad please come and do our road.”

Cllr Sevier said: “The most important thing to the residents is we are trying to do our best. We are pressurising the county to do something. But at the moment we have had no luck.”

A spokesman for Hampshire County Council said: “In order to keep residents and the travelling public safe, Hern Lane had to be closed earlier in the year due to flooding.

"This is now cleared and the road is open but the damage caused to the road surface by the recent wet weather means repairs are now needed.

"These are scheduled for later this year. Our highways teams are assessing the site to enable ditches and culverts to be cleared to help mitigate the impact of future rainfall. Once the drainage issues have been resolved, road repairs will take place.

“Our highways teams had already programmed surface repairs and ditching works in Buddle Hill earlier this year.

"In order to do these works safely, a road closure had to be put in place, including assent from Natural England.

"The weather has played its part in accelerating the deterioration of the road here, so, on further inspection after the severe weather in March, a decision was made to close the road for public safety until the works can begin in mid May.”
