Man drank himself to death

A MAN found dead in his Ringwood home was almost five times the drink drive limit, an inquest heard.

Gary Davis, 49, had been battling alcohol problems for around five years before drinking himself to death, Southampton Coroner's Court was told.

Mr Davis, of Linbrook Drive, Ringwood, was said to have consumed “four to six litres of strong cider” every day.

The inquest heard Mr Davis had been “alive and well” on the evening of June 2 2012, when his estranged wife, Dawn, saw him at about 6.30pm.

But Mrs Davis, who was in the process of filing for divorce at the time of his death, and her father-in-law, Brian Davis, found him dead in his bedroom the next morning.

Pathologist Eleanor Jaynes told the court that there was “a lot of fluid” on Mr Davis' lungs, as well as evidence of swelling to the brain and a “severely scarred” liver.

A 100ml sample of his blood revealed 386mg of alcohol, which put him at 4.8 times the drink drive limit.

Coroner, Keith Wiseman, said: “Mr Davis wasn't, as far as I'm aware, seeking to kill himself” and recorded a verdict of accidental death.
