Baby fair to offer alternative therapies

A HOLISTIC baby and toddler fair is being held at Ringwood Waldorf School this Saturday from 10.30am to 3pm.

Independent midwife and parent Erika Thompson and colleague Lucie Mann are offering a nearly-new sale alongside information about doulas, hypnobirthing, homeopathy, acupuncture, osteopaths and pregnancy yoga.

There will also be children's activities and games, and stands with details about naming ceremonies, twins and multiples support, children's centres, reusable nappies, slings and baby toys.

The event will be raising funds for Ringwood Waldorf School, in Folly Farm Lane.

Mrs Thompson is also organising a screening of a film on proposed changes to EU laws concerning independent midwives.

Freedom For Birth will be shown at the school at 8pm on September 20.

Midwives, women and MPs will be there to discuss a proposal to make independent midwives illegal from October next year.

Mrs Thompson said: “This is not about independent midwives - this is about women's choice and rights.”

I would urge people not to attend this event. These so called "treatments" have no basis in science and should not be considered for something as delicate about childbirth. There is a reason these practices are not 'mainstream'. At best they are ineffective, at worst they are dangerous. A recent example...

What a ridiculous comment, Dr S Brule. Alternative therapies are there to SUPPORT traditional medicine, and can be of huge benefit during pregnancy and childbirth. The case you mention above is tragic, yes, but very, very rare.
You are ignoring the fact that most women are intelligent and know their bodies and their babies. It's great that nowadays women have choices.
Best of luck to the Holistic Baby & Toddler Fair. I'm sure it will be a success.

Davina - if women know their bodies, are they all doctors or scientists? And 50% of women are of below average intelligence (think about that!). If you are claiming a `huge benefit' from alternative therapies, can we have some evidence please? I'll save you the trouble, almost the whole lot show know benefits at all in controlled trials.

Readers should know that Waldorf schools were the brainchild of the charlatan Rudolf Steiner, an overt racist and fantasist. He also established biodynamic farming, which integrates astrology with agriculture.

Which MPs are attending this event? Do they know what they are supporting?

Sorry, of course it should be `no benefits' not `know benefits'! One that escaped the spell checker.
