Marathon effort in high winds
12:00pm Friday 5th October 2012 in New Forest News By Karen Bate
COMPETITORS battled through high winds and torrential rain inthis year’s New Forest Marathon.
Horrendous weather on September 23 didn’t discourage more than 500 athletes from completing the race, with Kevin Quinn, of Aldershot, Farnham and District Athletic Club, crossing the line first in 2.37.25.
Of the local New Forest Runners, first to finish was Steven Morton in 2.59.11, which earned him an impressive sixth place overall and first in the male over-40 division.
The first female across the line was Julia Donovan of Wimbledon Windmilers in 3.15.32.
On the same day was the New Forest Half Marathon and, again, there was no putting off the competitors who were more than prepared to brave the elements.
More than 1,500 finished, with Lee Piercey of Performance Cycles taking the title in 1.13.0. Valeria Sesto (New Forest Runners) was the first female to finish in 1.12.38 ahead of Kathryn Bailey (Winchester and District AC) in 1.24.41.
