A guide to managing pests
THE Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has issued a call to researchers for a new encyclopaedia-style guide to managing pests across arable and field crops.
The publication would update and bring together all the latest information used as part of an integrated pest management strategy, complementing the weed and disease publications previously produced by AHDB’s three crop divisions – the Home-Grown Cereals Association (HGCA), the Horticultural Development Company and the Potato Council.
It is hoped the proposed publication will become the recognised reference source on managing pests and beneficials for all growers and agronomists.
Caroline Nicholls, HGCA research and knowledge transfermanager, said: “With fewer chemical control options, it is increasingly important to consider the whole rotation to help counter threats from pests – as well as diseases and weeds.
“This is why we wantedthepublication to factor in key pests of potato and field vegetable crops as well as arable crops.
“As part of an integrated pest management approach, beneficial insects must also be taken into consideration and it is important to be able to distinguish a beneficial from a target pest.
“The two will be considered side-byside in this encyclopaedia.”
