Rival vaccine could soon be available
LIVESTOCK health company Merial has announced that its new Schmallenberg vaccine, SBVvax, has been approved by French authorities to be sold to farmers this autumn, raising hopes that it will be available in the UK in the nottoo- distant future.
The company hopes that doses of the vaccine, which is currently being considered for approval in the UK by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD), will be available for French vets to use by October.
A Merial spokesman said: “In clinical efficacy studies, SBVvax showed prevention of viremia in 100 per cent of infected lambs and calves.”
MSD Animal Health was awarded a licence by the VMD to market the first Schmallenberg vaccine, which was available for use this summer.
If it enters the market, Merial’s vaccine will rival MSD’s, although it is understood that Merial is targeting its vaccine to appeal to mainstream producers considering vaccinating their flocks or herds.
This virus was first identified at the end of 2011 in cattle in Germany and the Netherlands. It primarily affects domestic ruminants such as sheep and cattle.
