Mike receives award for services to the New Forest
COMMONER Mike Eccles received an award from the Earl of Wessex at the New Forest and Hampshire County Show.
The New Forest Trust’s Diamond Jubilee Award is given annually to an individual who, without expectation of recognition or reward, has given freely of their own time and made a significant contribution towards the maintenance and improvement of the cultural heritage, conservation and rural economy of the New Forest.
Mr Eccles is a long-time commoner and helps run several New Forest organisations. He is often to be found assisting at drifts and other events throughout the forest. Trust chairman Richard Manley said: “I cannot think of a better recipient for the award this year.
“Mike was completely amazed on being told – this is typical of him as he is not one for a fuss – Mike’s dedication to helping with any tasks or projects in the New Forest is an example to us all and his selfless efforts to help many typify his passion for the New Forest.”
Head agister Jonathan Gerrelli said: “Two words epitomise Mike – dedication and reliability. Mike is an integral part of New Forest life.”
Mr Eccles said: “I was totally taken aback when I received the phone call to say that I was to be presented with this award and the fact that I was proposed by members of the forest community meant so much to me.”
