THE voluntary dairy code of practice is worth fighting for, the NFU has claimed.
At the Semex Dairy Conference in Glasgow last month, NFU president Peter Kendall claimed the dairy industry code of best practice for contractual relations still had a role in the industry. A review of the dairy code to suit the industry’s changing needs is due to take place in the near future and Mr Kendall claimed the code could evolve with the industry’s changing needs.
He said: “I think it is worth fighting for. Let’s not abandon the safeguards but make sure it evolves over time and is fit for purpose.”
The code came under fire from William Neville, agriculture lawyer at Burges Salmon, who attacked its short-term notice guideline.
Mr Neville also expressed frustration that the code had been “touted as compulsory” and said there was a lack of realism in the industry and that contracts between processors and producers could not be easily changed.
