A 19-year-old Salisbury woman will soon be among four British boccia players vying for a spot in the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.

Sally Kidson is the youngest member of Boccia UK’s World Class Performance Programme and placed fourth at the World Boccia Championship in Zagreb, Croatia last year, beating then world champion Ana Costa of Portugal in the process.

She will soon join her teammate Will Arnott of Arborfield and coach Glynn Tromans in Portugal on March 24 to begin the journey to Paris.

Sally and Will compete in the BC3 category of the games, meaning they make use of ramps and are joined on the court by their respective ramp assistants.

The other two-person British team hoping for a slot in Paris is that of Stephen McGuire and Fiona Muirhead, both of Lanarkshire, who compete in the BC4 category.

The BC3 and BC4 pairs both need to win medals in Portugal before they can book their Eurostar tickets to Paris.

Greg Baker, Boccia UK’s performance director, said: “It will be a fascinating few days in Portugal and rest assured we will give it everything we’ve got to ensure we deliver our very best performances.

“We have three athletes who have never competed at a Paralympic Games before so it’s really exciting to see that talent coming through.”

If Great Britain manages to secure places in the Pairs events, they also earn individual spots in Paris. Meanwhile, the BC1/2 Team has already qualified.
